This crucial step marks a decisive turning point in the simplification and harmonization of customs procedures between the two countries.

The SIGMAT, already adopted by the majority of ECOWAS member States, allows Real-time electronic exchange of customs data concerning goods in transit. Its objective: reducing border crossing times, avoiding redundant controls and strengthening the fight against cross-border fraud.

In his speech, Mrs. Adidjatou Hassan Zanouvi, Director General of Benin Customs, welcomed the transformative impact of this interconnection:

« Thanks to SIGMAT, we will significantly improve the flow, transparency and security of trade with our Nigerian neighbour. »

For its part, the Comptroller General of Customs of Nigeria, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyistressed the exemplary nature of this regional customs cooperation, made possible with the technical support of partners such as GIZ.

Beyond its immediate benefits to economic operators, the interconnection between Benin and Nigeria through SIGMAT aims to boosting the competitiveness of trade corridors, notably that of Abidjan-Lagos – the most frequent in West Africa. This system is fully part of the efforts toregional economic integration, of modernisation of customs administrations and securing public revenue.
