Atheme: Customs and the Republican Police dismantle a stock of counterfeit drinks in Ouédèmè

Over 800 kg of fraudulent products seized during a joint operation

Saturday 18 July 2026 – Benin Customs continues its offensive against illegal trafficking. A joint operation conducted by the Customs Brigade of Athiémé, in collaboration with the Office of the Republican Police of Ouédèmè, helped to get hold of a large stock of counterfeit beverages intended to be sold on the market.
Placed under the leadership of the Brigade Chief, Chief Customs Controller Clement HOUNKPE, the operation was triggered following a fraud notice. The investigations, carried out by Customs officers with the support of the Republican Police, resulted in a house visit which led to the discovery of several cartons of counterfeit beverages ready to be introduced into the consumption circuits.

Balance sheet: 826 kg of seized products
A total of nineteen (19) cartons were intercepted directly by the Customs. The procedure carried out jointly with the Republican Police then revealed forty (40) cartons and eight (08) extra bottles, for a total weight of 826 kilograms of fraudulent products.

An investigation is under way at the Office of the Commissioner of Ouédèmè in order to identify the perpetrators and dismantle the possible ramifications of this traffic.

This operation illustrates the inter-force cohesion and ongoing vigilance of the operational units of Benin Customs, in accordance with the guidelines of the Director-General, Colonel Raouf Malèhossou ABOUDOU, aimed at intensifying the fight against fraud in all its forms. Beyond protecting government revenues, these interventions also help to preserve consumer health by preventing potentially dangerous products from being placed on the market.
