Transit in the Republic of Benin is now subject to an electronic cargo tracking system.

This information was conveyed by the Director General of Customs and Indirect Rights through the Service Note No. 380/DGDDI/DLRI and Circular No. 3507/DGDDI/DLRI of 08 November 2017, in accordance with the requirements ofOrder No. 335/MEF/DC/SGM/DGDDI/400SGG17 of 31 October 2017, operationalizing the electronic transit tracking component of the Import Verification Program (ICP).

The launch of tracking activities is in line with the recommendations of the Revised Kyoto Convention (CKR), the General Agreement on Customs Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the Agreement on Trade Facilitation (AFE). The latter prohibit all measures aimed at slowing the rapid delivery of goods in transit, while advocating the maximum use of computer technology and the maximum reduction of customs controls.

For example, the electronic tracking system installed on behalf of the Customs Administration will allow its competent services to track cargo in transit at a distance and in real time, while travelling between the Customs office of departure and the customs office of destination.

As a result, the Director General has invited all unit heads and all partners, in this case those from the borders concerned, to a frank collaboration with the Société Benin Control SA and to respect scrupulously the procedure established for this purpose, which has been the subject of several awareness-raising sessions initiated jointly by the two structures.
